 | Original sushi topped with melted cheese is born from a fusion of Eastern and Western food cultures. Sushi Twist has a picture of the “Mona Lisa” on the wall. But look closely and you will see that the face and the famous smile have been altered to depict a beautiful Asian woman. This remarkable picture symbolizes the menu of Sushi Twist, which, as this restaurant’s name suggests, truly twists east and west together to give rise to a new taste sensation. The menu is best represented by the 30 different kinds of original sushi rolls offered. | | This sleek new addition to the Flatiron District has hit the scene with a menu that pays homage to the sushi tradition while simultaneously pushing the envelope with unique takes on what can actually count as Japanese fare. For starters, both the "Twist" and Crab salads are sure to please. The Twist combines fresh sashimi with springy mouthfuls of lettuce, avocado and seaweed and the end result is refreshing and delightful. The Crab salad is a bit rich – fresh crab doused in a mayonnaise sauce is the main event here - but it's impossible to keep the fork away from your mouth. In the roll department, in addition to the standards such as tuna avocado and California rolls, Sushi Twist offers up a Volcano Roll filled with more fresh crab and topped with sizzling melted Mozzarella and Masago Cheeses! Although some may be wary of the fishy-cheesy-combo -and sushi definitely departs the realm of healthy with this dish- the combination of heat, texture and flavor makes it a more than worthy dietary deviation. -RB

Sushi Twist fills a gap in this no man’s land section of Murray Hill, offering an array of above-average fish and a few baked Japanese standards. As the name would suggest, many of the sushi rolls have a “twist,” offering a large unorthodox selection. Go for the tastier-than-you’d-think volcano roll (crab, avocado and cucumber topped with mozzarella and then baked) or the spicy lovers roll (shrimp tempura, avocado and masago topped with more shrimp and tempura flakes and then sprinkled with mystery spicy sauce). Lovers of classic sushi will find all the regular hits---from the California roll to the Boston roll. A sizeable selection of sashimi is also on the menu. Nobu it's not---and that may be a good thing: you can always find a table and the atmosphere is unpretentious enough to make this eatery a fine standby when you get that sushi craving.
| | I will admit to a certain philistinism regarding sushi, generally erring on the side of safety and sticking with spicy tuna rolls. But pair me up with someone who knows a little more, and caution gets thrown to the winds. Especially when the food has been so fancifully, whimsically named.
Sushi Twist (a kind of one-stop entertainment mecca with a live jazz night on Mondays that features the specialty cocktail, "sax on the beach") offers up a slew of different options, from fantastically named rolls to tasty kitchen entrées. As always, cocktails came first with us: Diana went for the orange ginger caipirinha, while I chose the green tea martini, refreshingly crisp and very potent. Diana and I spent too long chatting about our days to properly peruse the menu, so I went with my gut and ordered us the beef negimaki ($7), a delicious offering of thinly sliced ribeye rolled around scallions with teriyaki sauce, and the Yakitori ($7), an amazing skewer of juicy grilled chicken, peppers and onions. Suddenly waiting until our appetizers came to get our drinks didn't seem like such a bad thing—as long as the quality of the food held up.
And it did, even if nothing else felt as inventive as the appetizers. Diana's spicy crunch roll ($14) was a great combo of yellowtail and salmon, topped with spicy tuna and tempura flakes, while my kalbi ($25)—though impossible to eat with chopsticks—was juicy and tender. Thin strips of short ribs marinated and sautéed in kalbi sauce and then served on a bed of assorted vegetables, it was literally finger-lickin' good. Literally because my always shaky skill with chopsticks certainly isn't advanced enough to hold a bone while I nibble off of it.
For dessert, it's all ice cream or fried bananas. We decided to split the mochi green tea ice cream ($3), the perfect gooey end to a tasty meal. | | While it’s chic to have a twist (because irony is dead), it’s even hotter to be a lounge and eatery. Sushi Twist may not sound like the most enticing spot, but therein lies the twist—it is. With fresh and creative rolls (ooh baby I like it raw!), plus numerous entrees, this spot also has a highly impressive cocktail menu (so much more than just some plum wine and sake, even though they offer a dozen varieties). With sixteen specialties, the Twist’s best are the Green Tea Martini, Red Lotus Lycheetini, and Orange Ginger Caipirinha, all expertly poured in their sexy front bar area. And the plot thickens—on Mondays, they offer Live Jazz with a prix fixe menu and Sax On The Beach cocktails.

Along the lines of the Sushi Samba chain (and also named after a dance), Sushi Twist brings trendy Japanese cuisine to the Murray Hill neighborhood. Indulge in some of the unique fusion rolls or risk overpaying for sushi you can get better elsewhere. The atmosphere is well worth the price, featuring dark, romantic decor, incredibly tasty martinis and beautiful eye candy walking around.

After waiting over an hour at another restaurant (with reservations), fed up, we decided to try Sushi Twist. We didn't have reservations, and it was 8 of us. Though it was pretty busy, they did their best and sat us down in less than 10 minutes. The staff was very welcoming, so we asked her to pick a few of her favorite rolls for us all the share. We all agree that the food was phenomenal. We all shared the Twist Salad, big enough for a meal, and the Explosion Roll was my favorite. They even surprised us all with dessert. Food, with the service, with the Twist cocktails made my birthday memorable! amazing i went to 20 sushi places while i was in ny for vaca and this place had by far, the best value. fresh fish, huge selection of hot entrees for those that dont eat sushi- and LOTS of rolls and appetizers for sushi lovers. if you like spicy raw fish try the buddy roll- if you dont eat raw try the salmon served over rice in the stone pot- dont know what its called. amazing amazing amazing. and of course, try the home made ice cream. what a surprise this place is madison ave's saving grace. the area needed a great local spot and this is it. great food, relaxing atmosphere, friendly people. between 4 people, we had 8 of the Special Rolls and some apps, and we could not have been happier. my favorite was the explosion- something like shrimp tempura and spicy tuna combined... heavenly!! Great Birthday Celebration I went to Sushi Twist to celebrate my birthday. Our waitress was very attentive and the sushi was very fresh and delicious. They had a lot of special rolls which was hard to chose from. The atmosphere was very warm. The food was delicious and at the end of our meal, the staff surprised me with an array of ice cream w/fried bananas and they sang happy birthday to me which I thought was very sweet of them. I'm definitely going back. | | | | |
